Sienna - She/Her

The Forest Atrium was inspired by the concept “Home” and is a collaboration between myself, friends, family and the land. This central room surrounded by forested doorways is an opportunity to sit and reflect on what “Home” means to us and how that fits within the context of the larger environment. To create this installation, we let the structure and the branches guide us, following the flow, texture, and flexibility of the material of the land. The process itself was a practice in community, forming and strengthening the bonds between us as we built and played with the earth.

Collaborators Include: Family: Jac, Ell, Galen, Faith, baby Milo. Friends: Claire, Pippin, Alister

Sienna is a scientific artist and student of biology who uses her numberism technique as a learning device and a tool for scientific communication. She draws entirely with numbers and equations by hand, selecting data that captures the subjects form and function. Each piece represents something new she has learned within biology, psychology or mathematics, and is designed to connect the public with the beauty of the scientific lens. Much of her work focusses on the intersections of the human body, mental health and nature. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Portland State University.

I usually work in solitude in an enclosed clean space. I create precise work that takes upwards of 100 hours to draw after months of preparation and planning. When I was invited to participate in the Verdancy Project, I decided to push myself outside my comfort to see what the experience would teach me. Every aspect of this project is a divergence from my practice, except for my love of nature. The experience of feeling the land affect me as I affected it inspires me to work more directly with the land and to create immersive experiences for future exhibits.
