Ruth Nelson - She/Her/They

"Bird Watching" is a tribute aiming to explore the magic, strangeness, beauty, and other-worldliness of birds while educating viewers on how these specific species contribute to the ecosystem and what could happen when/if they no longer exist. My aim for the piece is to ignite curiosity and imagination. I want to awaken people's senses, enabling them to truly notice and appreciate the magnificent symphony of sounds, vibrant colors, and intricate textures that nature generously offers us each day.

Ruth Nelson is a dancer, choreographer and event coordinator. She has performed for Portland choreographers Muffie Delgado Connelly, Eliza Larson, Danielle Ross and Subashini Ganesan-Forbes. In 2016, Ruth received an artist residency at New Expressive Works to explore compositional improvisation, a collaborative process where multidisciplinary artists build spontaneous pieces together within a specific time limit. In 2019, she and 16 artists across the US and Europe were invited to Berlin to participate in an international arts project called the Social Muscle Club: Peace Talk. There she debuted “no, yes, and” an interactive installation piece about boundaries, touch, and care.

This project is exciting because it is rare for me to have the chance to explore an artistic idea with the support and openness that the Verdancy Project is giving. Terra Incognita is a chance to dive into my own curiosities as an artist, to be open to possibility, and to notice the sounds, smells, and textures of nature. This opportunity is also a reminder of how we are always in dialogue with nature, whether we are present to it or not. But when we are present to nature, we have more awareness of the choices we make when interacting with it.
