Land Art Residency

We are excited to introduce our new Land Art Residency, a unique opportunity for artists of all disciplines to immerse themselves in the natural world and expand their creative practice. Situated on 4.5 acres of diverse landscapes, this residency invites artists to experiment with land-based art, using natural materials sourced from the environment. We will offer two artists a three-month land-based residency

3-Month Land Art Residency - 2 timeframe options

Spring Residency - March 30th - June 28th

Summer Residency - June 29th - Sept 27th

In recognition of the unique expectations of the TVP Land Art Residency, the typical residency fee will be waived. In place of the fee, artists are required to commit fully to the outlined expectations and responsibilities.

Please note that this is a land-based residency without formal indoor studio space or onsite sleeping accommodations. Artists will have access to the TVP land on Sundays only* during their residency period. Therefore, artists must either be local, or fully committed to attending the residency on the predetermined scheduled Sunday workdays. While there are no traditional indoor studios, artists will have access to the property’s bathroom facilities, nature library, book shed, and outdoor kitchen. The entire 4.5 acres of diverse landscape, including fields, woodlands, and gardens, will be available for you to explore and utilize in your creative process. This residency offers a unique opportunity to work directly in and with the natural environment, fostering a deep connection between your art and the land.

Expectations

  • Objective: Each resident artist is expected to create a land-based art piece that harmonizes with TVP’s natural environment. Need inspiration? Check out our 2023 Land Art Exhibition Terra Incognita or this Pinterest Board.

  • Material Requirements: At least 85% of the materials used in the artwork must be natural, organic, or biodegradable. Artists are encouraged to source materials locally from the residency site or surrounding areas. The use of non-natural materials should be minimal, intentional, and must not detract from the overall environmental integrity of the piece.

  • Environmental Consideration: Artists must consider the ecological impact of their work. The collection and use of natural materials should be done in a way that respects and preserves the surrounding landscape and biodiversity.

  • Schedule: Dedicated onsite workdays will be held every Sunday* during the resident's timeframe. Artists are expected to use this time to get to know the land and to develop and create their projects.

  • Participation Requirement: Artists are required to be onsite and actively working on their project for at least 10 out of the 13 scheduled workdays. This commitment is essential to ensure consistent progress and engagement with the residency program.

  • Flexible Additional Days: As the project progresses and the artwork nears completion, additional workdays may be added to the schedule. These days will be determined in consultation with the residency director and based on the artist's needs. Flexibility and open communication are key to ensuring the success of the project.

  • Maintenance: After completion, residents might be required to assist in the maintenance of their piece, especially if it’s designed to last over time. If it is meant to be temporary the artist is responsible for dismantling the piece and converting the land back to its original state.

Presentation and Artist Talk:

  • Final Presentation: Upon completion of the residency, each artist will present their land-based art piece at a Seed Session event. This presentation will serve as the culmination of the residency, showcasing the artist’s process, concept, and finished work. The artist must be available June 28th for the Summer Seed Session Presentation or Sept 27th for the Autumn Seed Session depending on what 3-month period they apply for.

  • Artist Talk: As part of the Seed Session, artists will give a short talk (approximately 10-15 minutes) about their piece. This talk should cover the inspiration behind the work, the creative process, the challenges faced, and how the work engages with the landscape and materials used. Artists are encouraged to reflect on their experience and how it has influenced their artistic practice.

We encourage artists of all disciplines to apply for this unique residency opportunity. Whether you're a painter, sculptor, photographer, or work in any other medium, this residency is designed to be a space for experimentation and growth. It’s a chance to step outside your usual practice and explore the possibilities of land-based art in a supportive and inspiring environment. We believe that creativity flourishes when artists are given the freedom to take risks, try new things, and engage with the natural world in ways they may not have considered before. So, whether you have experience in land art or are completely new to it, we welcome you to apply and stretch the boundaries of your artistic practice.

* Throughout the year, our Ponder Residency hosts artists who live and work onsite, creating a peaceful and focused environment for their creative process. To ensure we respect the space and concentration of these resident artists, we've designated Sundays as the primary workday for the Land Art Residency. This schedule allows Land Art residents to fully engage with their projects without disrupting the Ponder artists. Over the course of the 3-month program, participants will have access to at least 13 workdays, with the flexibility to be onsite from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM each Sunday, allowing ample time to immerse themselves in their creative work and the natural surroundings.
