It’s Not Easy Being Green: A Color Workshop

Eventbrite It’s Not Easy Being Green.png

In this hands-on workshop, we will spend time surrounded by and investigating the color GREEN. Participants will be introduced to the origins and symbolic uses of green throughout the history of art. From Ancient China to St.Patrick’s Day Parades, various shades of GREEN have been influencing our color memories whether we are conscious of them or not. For those of us accustomed to living in the terrarium that is the Pacific Northwest, we perhaps take our greens for granted--but after spending the day with this color, both beginning and more experienced artists will come away with a deeper understanding and greater appreciation of GREEN.

The instructor will introduce everyone to the variety of green pigments that come from her vast collection of greens in oil, watercolor and acrylic paints. You will have the opportunity to use small samples of these rare and exotic pigments as well as traditional combinations of blue & yellow. We will head out on a scavenger hunt across the Verdancy Project’s grounds in search of living examples of greens from nature. Once collected, you will begin to explore organizing and mixing the colors that you see to create your own record of variations of the color green. Knowledge of warm, cool, light, dark, etc. is not a requirement--we will explore the principles of color as we work.

About the Instructor:

Bonnie Paisley (she/her) is a lifelong fan of color and believes all colors are useful, nuanced, and inherently beautiful. In her work, she often explores the intersection of craft and fine art, as well as the terrain between painting and sculpture. Using a wide range of materials that have included found natural and man-made objects, insulation, spray paint, caulking, royal icing, discarded furniture, dishes, fabric, as well as more traditional painting mediums, she seek to crystalize memories and experiences as evidence of our existence, our connection to others and our connections to place. Her work takes the form of literal confections, large scale wall collages, as well as newer stop motion animation videos. She approaches her studio work much like a chef in the kitchen, combining, mixing, tossing, rearranging, and finally serving her creations. She received her BFA in 1999 from the Rhode Island School of Design, and her MFA in 2004 from Portland State University. Her work has been exhibited at Womxn House, New Expressive Works (in collaboration with performance artist Sarah Luella Baker), Ogle Gallery, the Art Gym, and the Alysia Duckler Gallery. She has installed work in Tryon Creek State Park and collaborated with the Crumb Collective for an installation for the Kitchen Sink.

For the past 15 years, she has enthusiastically and thoughtfully brought all her knowledge (as well as her ability to experiment) to her intimate small group classes at Paisley Studios (paisleystudiospdx.com).
